South Africa - The Kalahari

In 2017 we visited two game parks in the Kalahari: Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park which straddles the South Africa / Botswana international frontier and the fenced Tswalu Kalahari Game Reserve (which includes introduced non-native species, such of some kinds of antelope).

Both contain much scrubby vegetation as well as sand, but there was a striking difference in the distribution of fauna with many Ostrich, Oryx and Blue Wildebeest- which are able to survive in extreme drought - as well as many small mammals which live in burrows (both predators and scavengers as well as prey). Lion and Cheetah are prevalent as are huge numbers of Raptors.
