South Africa - Sabi Sands

Kruger National Park is the standard bearer for conservation in Africa. Its nearly 20,000 square kilometres of pristine bush veld and open savannah is home to myriad species of birds, reptiles and mammals, including all of the Big Five. Wildlife is free to roam between the national park itself and the private reserves that flank its unfenced western borders. In contrast to the Park itself, where all traffic is strictly confined to the metalled roads, in the private reserves vehicles are permitted to drive off-road when necessary in pursuit of good sightings.

In 2019 we visited two of the reserves in the Sabi Sands area: Ngala Tented Camp, for the first time, and Sabi Selati for the second time. The landscape of both is typical scrubby Bushveld. We arrived in the dry season but with heavy showers just beginning to occur leading to a few green shoots in the parched landscape.
